ULM Fall Commencement Saturday at Coliseum

The University of Louisiana Monroe's Fall 2017 Commencement Ceremony is 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 9 in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Degrees will be conferred by President Dr. Nick J. Bruno to students in ULM's three colleges and graduate school. Those students who finished their degrees during the summer sessions will also receive their diplomas. Approximately 749 degrees will be awarded; 584 bachelor's, 155 master's and 10 Ph.D. ULM alumni and member of the ULM Foundation, Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, Associate Professor in the Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education Department at Texas A&M University - Commerce, Texas, will serve as the commencement speaker.

Marine Band brings 'Santa Meets Sousa' to ULM on Saturday

The Marine Corps Band New Orleans will be in concert Saturday, Dec. 2, at the University of Louisiana Monroe. The "Santa Meets Sousa" performance is at 7 p.m. in Brown Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Community invited to Holidays at ULM this week

The University of Louisiana Monroe welcomes the holiday season with several days of events for the community and the campus. This year's Holidays at ULM is Tuesday, Nov. 28-Thursday, Nov. 30. Presented by the university, the School of Visual and Performing Arts and Student Life, families are invited to especially bring children to the special events on Wednesday.

Black Bayou Brass concert Wednesday at ULM

Black Bayou Brass, resident faculty brass ensemble in the School of Visual and Performing Arts, will perform a concert at ULM on Wednesday, November 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Emy-Lou Biedenharn Recital Hall. Ensemble members are Dr. James Boldin, Associate Professor of Music, Dr. Jeremy Marks, Assistant Professor of Music, and Dr. Aaron Witek, Assistant Professor of Music.

Health Studies students attend conference, leadership program in New Orleans

Three senior undergraduate Health Studies students, Mia Piazza, Lynh Ho and Savannah Pendergrass, attended the LeadingAge Annual conference in New Orleans, Oct. 29-31 with more than 5,000 attending. These three students attended the conference by applying for and receiving full scholarships through the LeadingAge organization. The students not only learned about innovative solutions used with today's aging population, but also participated in the Student Leadership Program where they were able to network with many other students and experts in this field while participating in leadership meetings.

Veterans Day: ULM salutes former aviation professor and alum and helicopter pilot Lt. Col. Ernie Bruce

Lt. Col. Ernie Bruce served as a helicopter in Vietnam before coming to the University of Louisiana Monroe to lead the ROTC program. He earned his masters and went one to teach aviation. Today, in retirement, Bruce volunteers his time maintaining and repairing the Ouachita Council on Aging on Ferrand Street. He was named OCA 2017 Volunteer of the Year.

ULM vs Florida State Rescheduled for Dec. 2nd

Florida State will host ULM on Dec. 2 in Doak Campbell Stadium, FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Stan Wilcox announced Tuesday. The game was rescheduled after the original date of Sept. 9 was canceled due to Hurricane Irma.

CSS doctoral candidate, Joan Collins Harwood, delivered a presentation on her dissertation topic, "Spiritual Fire: Infusing Love into the Discourse of Family Therapy." Likewise, CSS graduate, Roxanne Bourque, Ph.D., shared research from her dissertation, "Young Minds on Fire: Systemic Change Makes a Difference in Early Teaching." CSS graduate, Karen McClendon, Ph.D., contributed a political presentation, "Two Sides, One Country: How Systemic Thinking Creates a Context for Societal Change." ULM Instructors Jocelyn Chapman, Ph.D., and Bethany Simmons, Ph.D, co-presented "Feeding the Ouroboros: Gregory Bateson's Food for Thought and Thoughtfulness." Chapman discussed what Gregory Bateson had to say about "thought" and "thinking" and how this relates to "thoughtfulness" and Simmons shared how these ideas are at the heart of the origin of family systems therapy and how they are applicable not only in therapeutic practice, but also thinking about larger social systems and our participation in them.
