• 2001 National Outstanding University Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. This organization has more than 75 chapters in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

• 1999 Outstanding Professor of Liberal Arts; this was only the third time this award had been presented. His biography has appeared multiple times in both Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
