Dr. Mel Mobley is coordinator of the music theory/composition area, teaches percussion, and oversees
the electronic music studio of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. As composer,
conductor, performer, and advocate of new music, he has been part of numerous premieres
and festivals around the country. His compositions have been performed throughout
the United States and abroad and appear on the Revello, Navona, and Ansonica labels
. His work has been commissioned by The Monroe Symphony Orchestra and the Louisiana
Music Teachers Association as well as smaller chamber groups and soloists. His most
recent works, collaborations with choreographer/dancer Tina Mullone, focus on the
combination of live and recorded music and dance and seek to break down the barrier
between dancer and musician as well as between live and recorded performance.
As a percussionist, Dr. Mobley has performed with a wide range of groups including
orchestras, steel drum bands, theatre orchestras, and percussion ensembles. He is
the principal percussionist of the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, founder and director
of the Implosion Percussion Group, and member of the 2X2 Percussion Group. Recent
chamber performances include the 2017 PAS Day of Percussion (Baton Rouge, LA), the
2017Sugarmill Music Festival (Alexandria, LA), and the 2017 National Conference on
Percussion Pedagogy (Little Rock, AR).
Dr. Mobley is a founder and coordinator of the New Music on the Bayou Festival that
connects composers from around the world with the communities of north Louisiana.
He is a member of the National Composers’ Association, USA (NACUSA), and the American
Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) and the Percussive Arts Society
(PAS).
