Two University of Louisiana at Monroe student journalists won awards at the 134th Annual Louisiana Press Association (LPA) Convention in Biloxi, Miss. The students are staff members for the university’s student-run newspaper, the Hawkeye.

Wisner native Drew McCarty— a senior mass communication major and sports editor for the Hawkeye—won 2nd place for “Best Sports Story.”

Monroe native Daniel Russell—a senior computer information systems major and photo editor for the Hawkeye—won 2nd place for “Best Sports Photo.”

“The Hawkeye staff worked tirelessly last year to make student publications as successful as possible. These awards prove their hard work paid off,” said Dr. Christopher Mapp, director of student publications.

Seventy-two newspapers, publications, and college and university student newspapers submitted entries to the LPA.
