President's statement to ULM employees concerning Sept. 11th

In response to recent events taking place in New York City and Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, a number of actions are being taken on campus.

ULM police have been placed on alert and will be taking extra precautions to ensure safety and security on campus.

These steps include prompt follow-up on any suspicious actions, unauthorized packages or vehicles on campus, and additional security watches in building and offices.

Counseling services are available to students of others wishing to discuss events surrounding the tragedy. Sessions are scheduled for group discussions beginning at 12:30 p.m. today (9/12/01) and Thursday (9/13/01) on the second floor of the Student Union Building.

Students and others should contact the Counseling Center at 5220 for individual or more specialized support from our counseling staff.

At this time we do not anticipate closing classes.

Some athletic events have been canceled and a decision on others, including the football game in Cincinnati, will be made soon.

The horrendous terrorist acts of Tuesday have brought to the forefront serious realities concerning safety in the United States and the world. ULM has students and faculty from many nations. The actions by a few terrorists are not representative of the entirety of any ethnic group and we encourage everyone to conduct themselves with due consideration for others. We are a diverse community with a common interest in learning and the advancement of knowledge. We must use reason and good judgement in reflecting upon these events and honor one another as we join together to deal with the realities of safety in a free society.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all who have been affected directly or indirectly by these events.

Lawson L. Swearingen, Jr., President

Thomas A. Rakes, Provost
