ULM powerlifters to compete for state titles

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Power Lifting Team will compete for State Championship titles in Baton Rouge on Sat., Jan. 11, 2003. Competing for ULM will be Senior Detria Johnson, Freshmen Danielle Miller, Jerry Ross, and Jonathan Nicholson.

Miller will attempt to break the state squat and dead lift records while Johnson is going for the state squat, dead lift, and bench press records. Both girls will compete in separate weight classes. This will be the first collegiate competition for both males on the team.

Last year, two ULM Powerlifters won All-American titles at the Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals in Killeen, TX. The two students, Paula Ramirez and Detria Johnson, both took second place in the national competition for their respective weight classes.

Paula lifted a total (combination of highest squat, bench press, and dead lift) of 307.5 kg (677.75 lbs.) and Detria lifted a total of 337.5 kg (744 lbs.).

They competed against lifters from across the US, including competitors from the US Naval Academy (lifter who took 1st place in Detria's weight class) and LA Tech (lifter who took 1st place in Paula's weight class and a member of the defending and newly awarded 2002 championship team).

ULM's Power lifting team is in its second year. David Stanley coaches the team.
