ULM Cheerleaders and Warbonnets shine in competition

This past weekend in Orlando, Fla., both the ULM Cheerleaders and Warbonnets excelled in national competitions. The cheerleaders placed third in the final round of competition at the Universal Cheerleaders Association's College National Cheerleading Championship, and the Warbonnets placed 25th in the semi-final round of competition at the Universal Dance Association College Nationals.

It was the first time ULM's dancers, who competed in the IA Dance Division, competed at the national level. Jenifer Armstrong, assistant coordinator of Spirit Groups, is pleased with the dancers' performance.

"I could not have asked the Warbonnets to do a better routine, and I am extremely proud of them, she said. "This will help us tremendously with recruiting because high school dancers will realize that we are not only a football and basketball dance team, but also a competitive team."

The cheerleaders, who competed in the Small Co-ed Division for Division IA and I, maintain excellence despite having to compete with bigger schools, said Jennifer Sword, Spirit Groups coordinator.

"I am so proud of all of the cheerleaders. They have spent the majority of their Christmas break practicing two and three times a day. They came to Orlando and represented ULM very well,” Sword said. "It is such an accomplishment to compete with large schools year after year and continue to be in the top three in the nation."
