Monroe-West Monroe BPW contributes to ULM scholarship fund; aids non-traditional students
Acknowledging the exemplary assistance that ULM gives to its non-traditional students, the Monroe-West Monroe chapter of Business and Professional Women donated a $1,500 contribution to its existing BPW Scholarship Fund Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 2:15 p.m. in the Media Center (Library, 6th floor).
The scholarships will benefit non-traditional female students, 25 years or older, who must be enrolled in a formal degree path program or formal professional certification program.
Honored guests at the presentation included President James and First Lady Deborah Cofer and the BPW Executive Committee, specifically Chapter President Beth Betz and Angie Jackson-Wilson, treasurer and also national membership chair for BPW USA.
Betz recalled the lack of funds available to non-traditional students when she attended college as one in the 1980s. “I would like to convey the struggle that we recognize that non-traditional students go through. This is a personal pledge of mine to help encourage non-traditional students at ULM to continue with their education. With Business and Professional Women, it is my honor to be here today and present this check.”
President Cofer praised the organization for aiding ULM’s non-traditional student population. “On behalf of the university, thank you for assisting our students with this generous gift.”
The donation resulted from the organization’s fundraising banquet Oct. 16 at the Atrium; ULM First Lady Deborah Cofer was also honored there as the BPW Business/Professional Person of the Year. The fundraiser went hand-in-hand with the group’s 2007/2008 focus on continuing education/professional growth, specifically targeting the ULM scholarship fund.
Anne Lockhart, Development Director with the ULM Foundation, commended the BPW and their continuous support. “The chapter here has been very supportive with the scholarship they established several years ago. Now they have set their sights toward enhancing this endowed scholarship for non-traditional students through the ULM Foundation.”
BPW was founded in 1919 as a cross-generational, nonpartisan membership organization working to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information. The organization is regarded as a leader in grassroots activism, policy influence and advocacy for millions of working women.
