ULM’s Dexter Fontenot named National and Louisiana Hitter of the Week

ULM senior outfielder Dexter Fontenot was named Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced Tuesday afternoon.

The NCBWA board reviews candidates from each Division I conference each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.

Fontenot was also named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Baseball Hitter of the Week today to go along with Sun Belt Hitter of the Week honors he received yesterday.

He hit .650 (13-for-20) with four home runs, two doubles, 15 RBIs, nine runs scored, a 1.350 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage – 2.017 OPS -- leading the Warhawks to a perfect 5-0 record last week.

The Gonzales, La., native went 8-for-12 with three of his home runs and 11 of his RBIs in ULM’s (27-12, 17-4 Sun Belt) three-game conference sweep of Middle Tennessee. He hit two home runs in a game for the second Saturday in a row in ULM’s 25-10 blowout of MTSU after doing the same at Louisiana-Lafayette in the previous weekend.

He opened the week going 5-for-8 with four RBIs and a homer in a pair of midweek games against Centenary and McNeese State.

Fontenot leads the Warhawks hitting .402 on the season and .432 during Sun Belt play. He has already reached career highs in home runs (10), RBIs (48) and doubles (13). Fontenot is slugging .727 on the season and has an on-base percentage of .469.
