ULM to host first Oratorical Contest Dec. 3

The University of Louisiana at Monroe will host an oratorical contest open to all ULM undergraduate students at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 3 in Stubbs Hall 117.

The ULM Speech and Debate Team and communication department faculty member Dr. Turner Steckline will sponsor and coordinate the contest.

The contest’s goal is to present the importance of public speaking. Steckline stresses how speaking is crucial to human interaction.

Speeches will proceed in two rounds of six students each; winners from each round will advance to the final round. Communication faculty, graduate students and seasoned forensic students will judge the first round. Guest judges from the ULM and Monroe/West Monroe communities will judge the final round.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the contests top three winners. First place wins $100, second place wins $75 and third place wins $50.

Interested students are encouraged to write a persuasive speech that follows a problem-solution format. Students must register by Dec. 1.
