ULM Department of Communication presents 'Dixie Swim Club' Aug. 23

The repertory acting ensemble, The Prime Time Players, will present “The Dixie Swim Club” at 7 p.m., on Thursday,  Aug. 23, at Spyker Theatre at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

The Readers Theatre production is produced by The Prime Time Players and directed by Dr. C. Turner Wilson, associate professor of communication at ULM.

The play stars community members Sue Brooks, Susan Curry, and Brenda Rowan. The play also stars ULM sociology, gerontology, and political science faculty Marsha McGee, and Dr. Mara Loeb, associate professor and director of international students at ULM.

Started by McGee and Wilson, The Prime Time Players was conceived as a theatre group for people over 50, dedicated to “fun and fund-raising.”

Reader’s theatre, as a stylized form of theatre can be described as theatre of the imagination. The player’s performances are done with scripts in hand, and the material on stage is only suggested and not fully realized through sets or costumes.

This style of theatre breaks down the fourth wall between actor and audience, creating a unique perspective on the onstage performance, by asking the audience to “fill in the gaps” through their own abilities to imagine what is suggested.

Admission is $15 and checks can be made to the Department of Communication, ULM. All proceeds benefit Philanthropic Educational Organization International Projects.

Drinks and desserts will be served at intermission.

The show is sponsored by the ULM Department of Communication ULM Speech-Debate Forum, with the cooperation of P.E.O. Chapter BB.

ULM students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend a free dress rehearsal at 6 p.m. on Wednesday,  Aug. 22 in Spyker Theatre.
