Uploading Files To Your Own ULM Website Account
Last Update: August 5, 2011
Summary (K1)
Every ULM student has a personal website. You can use free software tools to copy files to your online ULM website account. This visual tutorial describes how to put your files online using a free software application. When your files are online, you can access them from anywhere.

Checklist
1. Tip: It is a a very good idea to store copies of your files in a designated folder on a USB flash drive (USB flash drive = "thumb drive" or "jump drive"), as explained below.
2. In this example, let's assume that the course catalog number of a ULM course is "4567". So, create a folder called "4567" on your USB flash drive. (Note: Of course, change this folder name for a different course number.) Use this folder as a storage area for files that you want to put online.
3. Find files that you want to put online and copy them into the 4567 folder.
4. How you name your files is very important. Follow these guidelines:
  • If you use Word, Powerpoint, or Excel files, save those files as Office 2003 flles. This ensures maximum compatibility. (When you save, make sure that you choose the "Office 2003" type of file format. So, instead of "proposal.docx", you want "proposal.doc".)
  •  Don't use special characters or spaces in the file name. Generally, it's a good idea to just use lowercase letters, numbers, and the hyphen (-) character.
5. Use an "FTP" software application ("FTP" = file transfer) to copy your files from your computer to your online website account; this process is called "uploading".  In this visual tutorial, the free WinSCP software application will be used to put files online.

You can download a "portable" WinSCP version (for Windows computers)  from this location:  http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/WinSCPPortable_4.3.2.paf.exe?download
(A "portable" application can be saved on a USB flash drive. When you click on the WinSCP.exe file, the WinSCP application will run directly from the USB flash drive, without installation on the computer.)
You may use any FTP application you like. There are many kinds of FTP applications.

6. You can access an online file called "proposal.doc" using this URL or Internet address:
          http://warhawks.ulm.edu/~yourlogin/4567/bin/proposal.doc
Your ULM "login" is the text that you see in your ULM email address just before the @ symbol:       yourlogin@warhawks.ulm.eduyourlogin
This is the folder name. (This name will vary, of course.)4567
This is the sub-folder name. (A "bin" is a container.)bin
This is the name of this sample file.proposal.doc

Copy and drag your files over to your website account.

Note: This visual tutorial will be revised in the near future. There should be an additional step in which an additional folder called bin is created. That is the folder where you will upload your files for this course. Sorry for the confusion!    /mb

Step 11: Accessing An Online File
How do you access your online files?

This is an active link to the astronomy.doc file:  http://warhawks.ulm.edu/~beutnehr/4567/astronomy.doc

Step 12: How To Hyperlink To An Online File From An Office Application
In Word, Powerpoint, or Excel, you can "hyperlink" to any file on the Internet. First you select "something" (like text or an image), and then you insert the Internet address:

Once your file is online, it can be accessed with a hyperlink from Word, Powerpoint, or Excel.
Again, this is the active hyperlink:  http://warhawks.ulm.edu/~beutnehr/4567/astronomy.doc

Q. The last few images show no bin folder. Am I doing something wrong?
A. It's a mistake. You are right. Instead of the astronomy.doc file being at this location (which it is):

 http://warhawks.ulm.edu/~beutnehr/4567/astronomy.doc

It should be at this location:  http://warhawks.ulm.edu/~beutnehr/4567/bin/astronomy.doc

Q. So, we should keep all documents, presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs and other files that we create in the bin folder. Right?
A. Right!

Q. And, we should keep all images in the img folder. Right?
A. Right!

Q. Is there an updated tutorial?
A. Yes. Please view this tutorial:  http://ulm.edu/~beutner/k2/#07
