MY STORY

I came to live with my current "rents" (that's slang for parents) in January of 2004 at the age of 5 months. I was living in Baton Rouge, LA with three other border collies since I was born. I was rescued after my family in Baton Rouge had to move and I didn't have a home. But my rescue took place because of a sheltie named Kaz I never knew. Here's the story my "rents" tell everyone about how I came to live with them.

In January, 2004, my "rents'" sheltie of 15 years had died and they decided to get another dog. But they didn't know what kind of dog they wanted, since they were still very sad about their sheltie. After looking in the paper, the online animal shelter, and various dog breed books, one of the "rents" said, "I had a border collie when I was a kid! She was a great dog!" So off the "rents" go to check out bordercollie.org (being the tech-savvy "rents" they are!). No sooner than they had found the web site - the phone rings! It's the "rents" daughter who lives in - Yep, you guessed it - Baton Rouge. She knew that the "rents" had lost their sheltie and she was sad, too. But she said that she knew where there were some dogs that needed a home and could we take one (or two or three)?

Well, the "rents" interest is now somewhat piqued at this point and they ask "What kind of dogs?"

"Border Collies" replies the daughter.

Talk about fate! The "rents" told the daughter to take some pictures and e-mail them ASAP (that daughter is pretty tech-savvy, too!). The "rents" saw my cute little face and they were mine! I had won their hearts!

Well, the daughter was coming home that weekend and I hitched a ride with her and her bossy chocolate lab that really pushed me around some. But I knew I was going to someplace better. After a few weeks, with a couple of visits to the vet for shots (ouch!) and de-worming (yuck - I got sick too many . . . well, never mind), a good bath and some premium puppy food (Hey - Science Diet Lamb & Rice is tops!), I really started to come around.

I've been through puppy obedience (although I wasn't very good at paying attention in class or doing well on my homework) and now I'm trying out beginning agility. WOW - is that ever fun!

But I remember everyday that I'm just one very lucky border collie, with some of the best "rents" in the world. And I owe it all to Kaz, the sheltie. You see, Kaz is still here. The "rents" had him cremated and he sits on top of the fireplace mantle in a fine ornate box. And Kaz told me that he brought me to them. He said it was the least he could do for the best "rents" he ever had!
