ULM Cleans Up During the Fall Semester "Reclaiming Our Campus" Event

Around 150 volunteers participated in the fall semester "Reclaiming Our Campus" on Saturday, October 12th. Volunteers met at 7:30 a.m. for breakfast, and work began at 8:00 a.m. Doughnuts were donated by Shipley's Donuts and ARAMARK provided the juice and coffee. Helpers who showed up received a "Reclaiming Our Campus" T-shirt and a coupon for a free meal from the ULM Alumni Association in "The Grove". The Alumni Association will serve food today beginning at 12:00 noon from their "Pig Roast" which includes baked potatoes. ULM plays a home football game against Idaho at 6:00 p.m.

Many volunteers worked in the Chemistry and Natural Sciences Building painting hallways. There were several student organization there to help.

President of Alpha Phi Alpha Karlton Washington talked about why he and 6 of his fraternity brothers showed up, "We are a service organization and we came out to serve our University."

Twenty-one members of Sigma Phi Epsilon also were on hand. Sig Ep Dustin Cotten said, "We are here today because we want to lead by example." Cotten and his fraternity brothers painted in the hallways of the Chemistry Building.

Other student organizations who lent a helping hand were the Honors Program from the Pharmacy Frys class, Leadership Scholarship, International Students, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Association of Information Technology, and others. Community involvement included employees from Chase and members of the Garrett family as well as others.

While some painted, others took the opportunity to do additional work. Members of the Student Government Association rearranged and thoroughly cleaned their offices on the second floor of the Student Union Building.

SGA president Charlie Cheatham was pleased with the number of helpers today and said, "Turn out was way more than expected. I believe many people came because they can actually see the change and they want to be a part of it. They want to give back to the University."

Members of the Campus Activities Board also remodeled their SUB office. The walls were painted and the students were excited about the upcoming arrival of 2 new computers.

Some landscaping projects were also tackled. People's Park I, a project begun by members of the Chautauqua Nexus, was raked and cleaned. Also, flowers were planted around campus and trees were pruned.

Last spring over 500 people participated in the initial event and approximately 100,000 sq. ft of walls were painted. Painting and other projects were carried out during the summer, and today was the first "Reclaiming Our Campus" event for the fall semester.

Mrs. Deborah Cofer said she appreciated everyone who showed their support for ULM by being there today.
