ULM foreign language professors present at state conference

Two foreign language professors from the University of Louisiana at Monroe traveled to Alexandria to present at the annual Louisiana Teachers Association Conference, Feb. 26-27.

The Association invited Drs. Chris Michaelides and Christian Rubio to present at the conference, attended by more than 160 language teachers from across the state.

Michaelides presented his work on embedding audio in PowerPoint presentation, a technology he recently introduced to area teachers during several in-service workshops. Michaelides developed this groundbreaking process of delivering online French courses last year.

Rubio presented “Los pensamientos e ideas de Giner de los Ríos, reviviendo la Institución Libre de Enseñanza.” The presentation was an extension of his research on the writers of 1898 in Spain and covered pedagogical ideas initiated in the famous school founded by Giner de los Ríos that inspired educational changes.

“Ríos was an innovator of his time when it came to education,” said Rubio. “He was the founder of the school of free thinking in Spain. His ideas revolutionized not only the pedagogy thoughts in Spain, but also Europe and the Americas.”

Rubio said his presentation pointed out that even though Ríos wrote in the 1800s, his ideas are still very much alive and many can be applied to today’s world.
