ULM social work students provide information on bullying to Carroll Junior High School

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Social Work Department's Human Behavior and the Social Environment class, under the direction of Dr. Pamela Higgins Saulsberry, department head, provided information on bullying to students at Carroll Junior High School Nov. 17.

This presentation was the culmination of a service learning project.

The students relayed information they collected on the subject of bullying from youth in the same stage of development as the students at Carroll Junior High.

The students covered the definition of bullying as stated by the youth surveyed, what youth can do individually if they encounter a bullying situation, what individuals can do collectively to reduced bullying activity, and which adults to seek out for assistance with bullying.

The Carroll Junior High School students were also given a youth hotline number to call in case they would feel more comfortable talking with someone outside of their family, their school or their immediate community about bullying.

"The ULM students enjoyed this opportunity to learn and provide a valuable service to their community simultaneously," said Saulsberry.

The information was well received by Carroll Junior High's School Guidance Counselor, Angela Nichols, and Dean of Students Michael Price, as well as the students, who were invited to participate as the presentation was in progress.
