ULM welcomes Texas high school once again

Pine Tree High School in Longview, Texas has returned to the University of Louisiana at Monroe for a second year in a row to hold its annual band camp July 30 through Aug. 2.

Every summer, the Pine Tree High School Marching Band participates in a long-standing tradition. Members leave their Longview, home for a week-long, pre-season camp that culminates with a competition intended to teach marching fundamentals and hone leadership skills.

In the past, the band – which calls itself "The Pride" - would stay at church camps or other rustic retreats.

Last year, band members discovered their ULM pride as they slept in the Commons II Dorm above Starbucks, ate meals at the Student Union Building, and enjoyed the benefit of top-notch band facilities.

They also had access to ULM music faculty members who offered their expertise during master classes and sectionals to prepare the students for their upcoming marching season.

Because of the experience and hospitality of last year’s camp, the band has returned to ULM to hold their camp, once again.

The band members go through an intense physical and musical workshop provided to test their endurance on their field and their knowledge of their craft.

“We are happy to again welcome the wonderful Pine Tree High School band students and staff to our campus,” said Dr. Derle Long, associate professor and head of the ULM Division of Music.

“We are going to do everything we can to make their stay as comfortable and productive as it can be.  We hope we can continue to be a good start to their marching season for many years to come.”
