Gwen Genius is a 1967 graduate of ULM College of Pharmacy (formerly NLU) and completed her MS in Pharmacy Administration and residency at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, TX in 1969.
Over the years, Gwen has worked in many different pharmacy settings. These include sterile compounding at MD Anderson, traveling for Owen Management Group, RX Director at Sisters of Charity, P&P RX Director Department of Corrections, and Genius Drugs in DeQuincy, LA, with her late husband (and former classmate), Malcolm Genius. Unfortunately, Gwen says that the Genius Drug Store building got blown away with the last two hurricanes to hit the area. Gwen and Malcolm were married for 16 years and together raised four children, Melanie and Michael and Mariela and Javier (from Belize). Gwen says they also had, “30 acres, 30 cows and lotsa birds!”
Along with pharmacy, Gwen has always had a passion for drawing and is a very talented artist. She even studied Commercial Art in Lake Charles so she could design her own ads for their drugstore (or at least that was her excuse!). She currently teaches botanical illustration and is trying to include more medicinals and poisons along with seasonal plants. She says that Dr. Prince at NLU got her into drawing plants and stippling, as well as Dr. Goorley with his Pycnanthemum albescens.
She has been featured in a YouTube video for Tarrant County Master Gardeners on “How to Draw Bluebonnets.” She had six Master Gardeners at the Texas Garden Club Headquarters this past Fall semester with more enrolled this Spring. She says they are doing great work and they hope to have an exhibition/reception in May.
In addition to her drawing, she also loves to garden, paint and teach piano and foreign languages (Spanish and Modern Greek). Gwen resides in Fort Worth, TX. Her daughter Melanie and family are close by so she gets to see them often.
Gwen stays connected to her ULM pharmily by attending various pharmacy alumni events, especially the virtual events we’ve held over the past year.
