Endowed Scholarships

The Endowed Superior Graduate Student Scholarships Program was introduced in 2014 through the Board of Regents Support Fund (BORSF). This program pairs a 60% private-sector match with a 40% Board of Regents award to endow a Scholarship that may be used in support of graduate and first-professional students as well as post-doctoral fellows.

ULM Foundation endowed scholarships established with 100% private donations require a minimum corpus of $25,000, which may be accrued over a period not to exceed 60 months. An endowed scholarship specifies that the principal be held intact, invested, and the annual income used for student scholarship awards. When the scholarship is established, a scholarship criteria agreement defines the contact information for the donor(s), the specific purpose of the scholarship, and the specific guidelines or criteria for the use of the award.

Annual scholarships (non-endowed) may be established with an amount recommended to be not less than $1,000 per year and a minimum of 5 years.

The ULM Scholarship Office awards all scholarships.

Endowed Chairs

The Endowed Chairs for Eminent Scholars Program was introduced in 1987 through the Board of Regents Support Fund (BORSF). This program pairs a 60% private-sector match with a 40% Board of Regents award to endow a Chair to be filled by a scholar of high renown and great ability. The Board of Regents endows Chairs in any discipline at two levels:

• $1 million total endowment ($600,000 private investment/$400,000 BORSF)
• $2 million total endowment ($1.2 million private investment/$800,000 BORSF)

The endowed chair is a distinction awarded by the university to a scholar or teacher in recognition of past and potential original contributions to the individual's academic discipline. In addition to the academic honor given to the individual, an endowed chair provides funding for support of his or her teaching, research, and service responsibilities.

Endowed Professorships

The Endowed Professorships Program was established by the Louisiana Board of Regents in 1990-91. The Endowed Professorship program is designed to broaden opportunities for faculty enhancement on diverse types of campuses.

Endowed Professorships help recruit superior new faculty and/or retain faculty whose research, teaching, and/or public service have uniquely contributed to the missions of their departments and institutions.  A major purpose of the Endowed Professorships program is to create stronger economic development ties between the private sector and higher education.

An Endowed Professorship is established by pairing an 80% private-sector gift with a 20% Board of Regents award through a permanent trust fund - the Louisiana Education Quality Support Fund. The minimum private investment required to establish an Endowed Professorship is $80,000.  This gift is then eligible to receive the Board of Regent’s $20,000 match, creating a $100,000 Endowed Professorship.

Endowed Professorships are flexible and intended to meet the needs of widely varying disciplines, campuses, and academic units in one or more of the following ways:

• to provide salary or discretionary spending supplements that will increase the retention of exemplary professors
• to enhance research competitiveness in achieving Federal funding
• to improve research ties with industry by linking industrial researchers with faculty
• to strengthen the capacity of departments to achieve regional, interstate and/or national eminence in education or research
