ULM hosts Journey of Hope cyclists for 11th year as team rides cross-country for the disabled

Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, 20 enthusiastic ¬- if not a bit weary - bicyclists with Journey of Hope arrived at the University of Louisiana Monroe.

Hot and tired after pedaling more than 100 miles from Shreveport to Monroe, the cyclists and six support crew looked forward to a shower, Southern cooking, and a bed for the night.

A delegation from the University of Louisiana Monroe participated in the inaugural Universities of Louisiana Black Male Summit at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette to celebrate and exchange innovative strategies concerning Black men in higher education.

ULM students Carl Whitlock and Earnest Wyatt were selected as R.F. Lewis Scholars as part of the BMS. Each of the nine universities in the University of Louisiana System chose two students for the honor.

ULM's Jacob Andrews and Connor Nimrod reach the pinnacle of Louisiana college fishing

Jacob Andrews' first experience fishing a college bass tournament with Connor Nimrod -- the 2021 Louisiana B.A.S.S. Nation College State Championship on March 14 -- was an eye-opener.
With five bass estimated at 19 pounds in the livewell late in the tournament, the team went looking for "hawgs," the big girls, on beds at Caney Lake. Nimrod, a Kansas native, got the big bite and set the hook. Andrews turned to look and was aghast at the sight of an unhappy 11-pound bass connected by 8-pound fluorocarbon to, get this, a spinning outfit.

Patent awarded for ULM professor's research into olive oil treatment for breast cancer

The University of Louisiana Monroe is pleased to announce a U.S. Patent has been awarded based on research led by a ULM College of Pharmacy Professor.

Khalid El Sayed, Ph.D., a Professor of Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry in the School of Basic Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Sciences, College of Pharmacy, piloted the research into a process to isolate oleocanthal from olive oil for use in breast cancer treatment and relapse prevention.

ULM unveils BLM public artwork at ceremony on Monday, Jan. 25

The unveiling of the Black Lives Matter public artwork was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at the University of Louisiana Monroe Library overhang.

On display at Bayou Park, the 16 letters stand individually to spell Black Lives Matter. Each 4-by-8-foot painted letter is a different artist’s interpretation of the BLM social justice movement.

Blackhawk lands at ULM, transports ROTC cadets to training at Fort Polk

A Blackhawk helicopter landed Friday morning behind Malone Stadium to pick up a special group of University of Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, and Grambling students.

The U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets were delivered to Fort Polk, La., for a weekend of training exercises. It was the first time a Blackhawk landed on campus to transport ROTC students.

ULM Summer/Fall Commencement Ceremonies planned for Dec. 19: ceremonies held by college

The University of Louisiana Monroe will hold commencement ceremonies on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, in Fant Ewing Coliseum. Due to state regulations on the number of people who can be in the coliseum at one time, separate ceremonies for each college will be held throughout the day.

The schedule is: 8 a.m. - College of Arts, Education, and Sciences; 11 a.m. - College of Business and Social Sciences; 3 p.m. - College of Health Sciences; and 6 p.m. - College of Pharmacy. Graduate students will participate with their academic colleges during these time periods.

Music in the air: Sean O'Pry returns to direct Sound of Today

The ULM Sound of Today (SOT) Marching Band practices for days preparing for the fall football season. It's August in Louisiana and feels like you're wrapped in a hot, wet, wool blanket - a sweltering mix of high humidity and even higher temps.

Delta Dental $20K grant provides PPE for students, equipment for Dental Hygiene program

The Dental Hygiene program at the University of Louisiana Monroe will purchase additional personal protective equipment - commonly known as PPE - thanks to a $20,000 grant from Delta Dental Community Care Foundation.

TRIO Programs assists student-parents with childcare costs through CCAMPIS

In 2018, Congress tripled federal funding for student-parents, and that year the University of Louisiana Monroe received its first Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant of more than $122,000.
Thanks to this grant and other federal funding, childcare assistance is available to eligible student-parents through the university's TRIO Programs.

During a lecture on the Molecular & Cell Biology and Immunopathogenesis of coronaviruses attended virtually by more than 125 people, Konstantin "Gus" Kousoulas, Ph.D., head of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, revealed that the drug Nelfinavir mesylate (NFV, brand name Viracept), holds exceptional promise in limiting COVID-19 infections.
