MONROE, LA – Two programs from the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences at the University of Louisiana Monroe recently collaborated to create a unique learning experience for a group of students. On March 25, 2024, students from Dr. Monica Bontty’s History of Biblical Lands course, as well as ULM History Program Coordinator Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, worked together with Art Program Coordinator Megan Smith on a ceramics project.
During this collaboration, the students created models of ancient oil lamps using ceramic techniques taught to them by Professor Smith. The group included graduate students Trinity Foucha and John McJunkins, and undergraduate student Lena Jones. The students had recently studied the oil lamps of the ancient world and were granted the hands-on opportunity to create their own. Each of the participants created two oil lamps of assorted styles that corresponded with the period discussed throughout their course.
The project allowed the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences to band together to represent the connection between art and history and to diversify the learning opportunities presented to the students.
"This event gave students a taste of the kind of history learned by doing. It was an opportunity not just to read about ancient oil lamps but to experience what it would have been like to make one,” said Dr. Jeffrey Anderson.
