Is the program accredited?
Yes. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).
What is the average length of the program?
The program can be completed in three years. The maximum amount of time allowed, without an approved extension, is six years. Our graduates generally take a little less than four years to complete the program.
Can I apply if I don't have a background in Marriage and Family Therapy?
Applicants to the PhD program must have a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, or the equivalent. Students without a background in MFT must take prerequisite courses to achieve the equivalency of a master's degree in the field. The exact number of prerequisite courses each student needs cannot be determined without a thorough review of applicant transcripts. Please note that transcripts will not be reviewed unless application to the University has been made and the application fee has been paid.
Can I attend as a part-time student?
No. The program is a cohort model and cannot accept part-time students.
Can I get a graduate assistantship?
Graduate assistantships at the doctoral level generally include (but are not limited to) research assistant positions and Assistant Director of Clinical Services. If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, please fill out the application and recommendation forms included in the program application packet.
When will I be notified regarding an admissions decision?
If you have been selected for an on-campus interview, you will be notified by mid-March. If you are accepted to the program, you will receive notification in writing by the first week in April.
