APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate training program is based on national educational standards for immunization training from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  This practice-based curriculum represents a fusion of science and clinical pharmacy. The program, which emphasizes a health care team approach, seeks to foster the implementation of interventions that will promote disease prevention and public health.  The purpose of this certificate training program is to prepare pharmacists with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to provide immunization services to patients across the life span.

The goals of this program are to: 

Educate pharmacists about:

• The impact of vaccines on public health.
• Pharmacists’ roles in immunization.
• Immunologic principles of vaccine development and immunizations.
• Vaccine-preventable diseases and the vaccines used to prevent them.
• Strategies for improving immunization rates. 
• Requirements for pharmacists who provide immunization services.

Prepare pharmacists to:

• Read an immunization schedule and identify appropriate vaccines for individuals across the life span and with special needs.
• Educate patients about the benefits of vaccines and dispel myths about vaccines.
• Safely administer vaccines to patients via subcutaneous, intramuscular, intranasal, and intradermal routes. 
• Operate an immunization service in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
• Partner with immunization stakeholders to promote immunizations and the immunization neighborhood.

Direct pharmacists to resources necessary to:

• Promote public health through immunizations.
• Access regularly updated information about vaccines and their use.
• Effectively communicate with patients and other stakeholders about resources.
• Operate an immunization service in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.

Virtual Training Consent:

The APhA Certificate Training Program hosted by the ULM College of Pharmacy will be offered in a virtual format. Zoom Video Conferencing will be used to deliver the live session. 

By registering for this program, you agree to participate in the live portion of the course by using active video and audio feed through your computer or audio device. Additionally, you agree to obtain your own supplies for injection technique skills assessment, complete the skills assessment in a human arm, and be assessed by someout outside of faculty who has the scope of practice to immunize. Credit for completion of the certificate program will only be granted to participants who complete the self-study requirements, are verified as physically present throughout the duration of the live session, complete the skills process with a passing assessment, and receive a passing score on the online post-test.

Schedule of requirements and other important details:

Submit registration by June 20, 2023 ➡ Complete self-study modules and exam by June 28, 2023 ➡ Attend virtual live training on June 29, 2023 ➡ Complete injection technique assessment by July 6, 2023 ➡ Complete final exam and evaluation and claim certificate by July 13, 2023

Home study activities – complete modules, home study assessment, and home study evaluation before June 29, 2023

Live seminar – Join ULM College of Pharmacy faculty via Zoom on June 29, 2023 from 8 AM to 5 PM to complete the live seminar (all participants will be provided with a link)

Injection technique assessment – 

• You are responsible for obtaining supplies needed and identifying a healthcare professional who can evaluate your technique within a week of the live seminar
  • Requirements to serve as the evaluator:
    • Your evaluator can be anyone who has the current scope of practice to immunize (e.g, a trained pharmacist, a nurse, etc.). 
    • Must assess based on the technique taught in class
    • Must have had OSHA training for bloodborne pathogens within the last year
    • Learners cannot assess themselves or fellow learners
• Your evaluator must observe you successfully give another person two intramuscular and one subcutaneous injections and complete the Injection Technique Assessment Form (instructions and form will be provided)
  • The arm does not need to be another learner, it can be a friend, significant other, etc.
  • The assessor cannot provide their arm for the learner to do their injections
  • The arm cannot be an actual patient
  • The assessor has to visually see all three injections
• Upon registration for this course, you will need to obtain the following supplies for completion of the skills assessment:
  • Gloves (minimum 1 pair) & mask
  • 1 mL or 3 mL x 25G x 1 inch safety syringes for intramuscular injections (minimum 2)
  • 1 mL or 3 mL x 25G x 5/8 inch safety syringes for subcutaneous injections (minimum 1)
  • Bandaids (minimum 3)
  • Alcohol swabs (minimum 4)
  • Cotton balls or gauze pads (minimum 3)
  • Sodium chloride 0.9%, preservative free, single dose vial, 10 mL or smaller (minimum 1)
  • Sharps or safe disposal container (1)
  • Screening questions worksheet
  • Influenza Vaccine Information Statement (VIS)

Completed and signed injection technique assessment and outside assessor forms must be returned to the program coordinator no later than July 6, 2023.

Attendance code redemption and final exam and evaluation – Upon successful completion of the injection technique assessment and the Injection Technique Assessment Forms, you will be emailed a code to redeem which will give you access to the final exam and live seminar evaluation.  Once the exam and evaluation are completed, you can claim credit and access your certificate of achievement.  These steps must be completed by July 13, 2023.

Accreditation Information 

The American Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. The home-study portion of the Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate training program is approved for 12 contact hours (1.2 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit (UAN: 0202-0000-23-155-L06-P). The live training seminar is approved for 8 contact hours (0.8 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credit (UAN 0202-9999-23-155-L06-P).

Initial Release Date: March 31, 2023

Expiration date: March 31, 2026 - PLEASE NOTE:  NO Home Study credit granted after this date; Live Credit can only be granted within 60 days from the day of the seminar attended.

Activity Completion Requirements

To obtain credit for "Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery" complete home study activities, complete both home study and final assessments with a grade of 70% or better, attend the live seminar, successfully complete the injection technique assessment, complete the evaluation, and CLAIM credit. To obtain credit, the Learner must CLAIM credit once each component is completed. Once credit is claimed, Transcripts of CPE will be available online within 24 hours on the Learner’s CPE Monitor profile.  The Certificate of Achievement will be available online upon successful completion of the necessary activity requirements on the participant’s “My Training” page on www.pharmacist.com.

Technology Requirements: Live Seminar -  Computer and Internet access is required to complete this activity.  Please visit APhA’s website to view the Technology System Requirements to have a positive learning experience.

The Live Seminar portion will be conducted online. To participate, the registrant must:

• Join Zoom webinar by computer, tablet, or any mobile device
• Must have a working camera and have video enabled throughout the entire program
• Must be present for the entirety of the program to be eligible for completion of the certificate training
• There is a Zoom app that can be downloaded on mobile devices through the App Store or Google Play. Search for Zoom Cloud Meetings app.
• In planning to use a MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, etc., please navigate to https://zoom.us/ (using the Mac computer that will be used for the Zoom session), click on the Download link on the right side of the screen, download and install/run the installer program (named Zoom.pkg).
• Join the meeting 15-30 minutes early to test that your microphone and camera are working properly and to check-in

Refund Policy:   The fees for the program include APhA fees (which includes 20 hours of Continuing Education credit upon successful completion).  Once registration is received and/or payment has been processed, an access code to online study materials will be issued.
