Summer Research Internship Program 

Starting on June 3, 2024, the ULM College of Pharmacy will offer either an eight-week ($3,000) or four-week ($1,500) paid program designed for ULM Undergraduate Biology, Chemisty,Pre-Pharmacy, Toxicology and ULM Pharmacy students wanting to participate in scientific research.  The Summer Research Internship Program (SRIP) hopes to attract applicants who desire to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods and other aspects of biomedical, pharmaceutical and/or clinical research by engaging in studies under the direct supervision of experienced research faculty.  Applicants must have completed at least two full semesters of undergraduate coursework or two full semesters of Pharmacy professional program coursework by the June 2024 start date to be eligible. 

Regarding ULM Pharmacy students, Associate Dean Dr. Paul W. Sylvester, the SRIP Coordinator, will work with the Office of Experiential Education to develop a schedule that will allow participation while completing Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).

To apply for the 2024 SRIP, application materials must be sent electronically as described below.  Please include all materials in a single email communication.

The 2024 full-time eight-week SRIP program will run from Monday, June 3, 2024 through Friday, June 28, 2024 and July 8, 2024 through July 26, 2024.  The 2024 part-time four-week SRIP program will run from either Monday, June 3, 2024 through June 28, 2024 or July 8, 2024 through August 2, 2024.

Students will devote 40 hours a week on their respective research projects.  Students must be available and present for the duration of the internship (i.e. no vacations/breaks will be taken outside of recognized ULM national holidays).  Students will present their research to their fellow SRIP peers, faculty mentors and the research community at the conclusion of their internship. The research symposium is mandatory for all participants and will take place during the last week of the program.

Requirements for ULM Undergraduate Biology and Chemistry Students

Program Eligibility:

 

    • We are looking for motivated current ULM students in good academic standing.
    • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher (on a 4-point scale).
    • Have completed at least two (2) semesters of undergraduate coursework completed.
    • Participants must be available 40 hours/week for either the full-time or part-time programs.
    • Students must be available and present for the duration of the internship (i.e. no vacations/breaks will be taken outside of recognized ULM national holidays).

    • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher (on a 4-point scale).
    • Have completed at least two (2) semesters of undergraduate coursework completed.
    • Participants must be available 40 hours/week for either the full-time or part-time programs.
    • Students must be available and present for the duration of the internship (i.e. no vacations/breaks will be taken outside of recognized ULM national holidays).

Requirements for ULM Pharmacy Students

Program Eligibility:

 

    • We are looking for motivated current ULM Pharmacy students in good academic standing.
    • Have a cumulative Pharmacy GPA of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-point scale).
    • Have completed at least two (2) semesters of their Pharmacy education and have at least one year of their Pharmacy education remaining after completing the SRIP program.
    • Students must be available and present for the duration of the internship (i.e. no vacations/breaks will be taken outside of recognized ULM national holidays)

Research Abstracts/Publications:

It is anticipated that students, based on their participation in a research project, will be included as a co-author on one or more research presentations submitted to national or regional meetings and/or successfully written manuscripts submitted for publication. 

Other Activities/ Expectations/Opportunities:

Although the primary focus of the internship is participation in conducting basic and clinical research and writing (90% of an intern’s time), there will also be opportunity to engage in other academic or research activities such as lectures and seminars.

Stipend

Participants in the SRIP who are working full-time (8 weeks, 40 hour/week) or part-time (4 weeks, 40 hours/week will receive a $3,000 or $1,500 stipend, respectively.

The submission deadline is Monday May 1, 2024, all materials must be received by that date. It is anticipated that notification of award for an internship will be made before the end of May, 2024.
