ULM’s Risk Management and Insurance program can help you specialize and stand out from other program graduates. We are nationally known for a special area of risk management and insurance called Surplus Lines and Reinsurance. This emphasis focuses on managing high-risk industries such as oil and gas, coastal property, medical, and technology risks.

At ULM, you’ll learn to underwrite commercial insurance submissions, use underwriting guides to offer quotes, and create analytical reports recommending client coverage by working through real-world situations, not just theoretical bookwork.

Our program is top-notch and has courses that are only taught here at ULM. For example, we offer many experiential learning courses where you can role-play through simulations and gain hands-on experience making industry-related decisions.

Assessment doesn’t just happen through paper tests. As an RMI major, you’ll have the opportunity to present what you’ve learned through analysis and presentation in mock insurer-client situations.

Currently, there are more than 2 million people working in Risk Management and Insurance. By the year 2030, nearly half of this workforce is expected to retire. But because there are only about 40 Risk Management and Insurance programs in the country, industry leaders are scrambling to find candidates to fill these roles in major cities and small towns around the world.

This means that Risk Management and Insurance majors are in high demand and you can fill in the gap! ULM is a top university for employers to recruit. Surplus lines brokers across the country hire more graduates from our program than any program in the nation.

Most students have full-time positions secured several months before graduation. Alumni recruit here as well and regularly return to hire ULM graduates.

This four-year degree sets you up for an exciting career and a big salary. Should you choose to continue your education, a undergraduate degree in RMI is a great building block for graduate school. After finishing, you could go on to earn an MBA, pursue law school, or even start your own business.

Risk Management and Insurance faculty work closely with all students to help them secure internships with alumni and business owners. They will also help you develop your career profile, resume, and location preferences, making the post-grad job search a lot easier. This kind of one-on-one career counseling and attention is something you’ll need to make the right choice as graduation approaches and you are bombarded with job opportunities and offers. Because of this, the majority of ULM Risk Management and Insurance students have secured jobs weeks and months before they graduate.

Most ULM Risk Management and Insurance majors participate in a paid industry internship before graduation. Taking part in a Risk Management and Insurance internship will allow you to gain practical experience in the workplace. This boosts confidence when interviewing with potential employers as you will have proven experience working across industries and with client management.

Things you might do as an intern:

ULM students have been a part of the prestigious, national Wholesale Specialty Insurance Association internship program for the last 25 years. This all-expenses-paid internship includes a paycheck, room and board, and transportation to the city you would like to work. Students have interned in Boston, New York City, Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, Tampa, and San Francisco, and more over the years.

Getting a degree in Risk Management and Insurance will bring you job stability and advancement opportunities, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. You will be eligible for numerous scholarship opportunities both regionally and nationally. From national $5,000 scholarships to the $8,000 Stephen Cavanaugh Scholarship for Louisiana Risk Management and Insurance majors, there is plenty of funding to be found. Additionally, 10 ULM Foundation scholarships are available only to Risk Management and Insurance students.

Plus, all first-time, full-time freshmen may be eligible to receive Academic Scholarships and Housing Awards, and out-of-state students may qualify for the Out-of-State Warhawk Scholarship, which waives all non-Louisiana resident fees. With ULM’s generous scholarships, your education will be both high quality and more affordable.
