We are nationally known for a special area of risk management and insurance called Surplus Lines and Reinsurance. This emphasis focuses on managing high-risk industries such as oil and gas, coastal property, medical, and technology risks.
At ULM, you’ll learn to underwrite commercial insurance submissions, use underwriting guides to offer quotes, and create analytical reports recommending client coverage by working through real-world situations, not just theoretical bookwork.

Most ULM Risk Management and Insurance majors participate in a paid industry internship before graduation. Taking part in a Risk Management and Insurance internship will allow you to gain practical experience in the workplace. ULM students have been a part of the prestigious, national Wholesale Specialty Insurance Association internship program for the last 25 years. This all-expenses-paid internship includes a paycheck, room and board, and transportation to the city you would like to work. Students have interned in Boston, New York City, Atlanta, Houston, Phoenix, Tampa, and San Francisco, and more over the years.
Scholarships and Funding
Getting a degree in Risk Management and Insurance will bring you job stability and advancement opportunities, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. You will be eligible for numerous scholarship opportunities both regionally and nationally. From national $5,000 scholarships to the $8,000 Stephen Cavanaugh Scholarship for Louisiana Risk Management and Insurance majors, there is plenty of funding to be found. Additionally, 10 ULM Foundation scholarships are available only to Risk Management and Insurance students.
Plus, all first-time, full-time freshmen may be eligible to receive Academic Scholarships and Housing Awards, and out-of-state students may qualify for the Out-of-State Warhawk Scholarship, which waives all non-Louisiana resident fees. With ULM’s generous scholarships, your education will be both high quality and more affordable.
