The ULM Political Science program offers an undergraduate degree in political science (BA) with concentrations in pre-law and public administration and a graduate degree program in public administration (MPA). Students can take courses in American politics, law, comparative politics, international relations, public policy, nonprofit administration, and public administration.
The program is known for its outstanding students, including an award-winning mock trial team. Our students are offered abundant opportunities to intern in Washington, DC and other places around the U.S. Political science majors are actively engaged in university life, and many are campus leaders involved in Student Government Association, College Democrats, College Republicans, Pi Sigma Alpha, the Pre-Law Association, Model United Nations, and other student organizations. Graduates go on to excellent law schools and graduate programs; work in Washington, D.C.; state legislatures and agencies; nonprofits; federal law enforcement; the diplomatic corps; public relations; political consulting; education; and many other fields.

COST & FINANCINGThe political science program houses the ULM Mock Trial team, which has qualified for the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) of the American Mock Trial Association’s (AMTA) national tournament every year since 2015. ULM is the only university or college in Louisiana to qualify for the AMTA national tournament and earn a national ranking from AMTA during this time. AMTA is the governing body for intercollegiate mock trial competitions.
The political science program is a member of the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA). NASPAA is the global standard in public service education and the recognized global accreditor of master's degree programs in public policy, public affairs, and public administration. NASPAA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 membership association with more than 300 institutional member schools at U.S. and non-U.S. universities that award degrees in public administration, public policy, public affairs, nonprofit and related fields.
Presently, 75% of our graduates attend law school and have a 100% acceptance rate over the last five years. These schools include, but are not limited to, Leiden University (Netherlands), Tulane University, University of Washington, University of Georgia, Rutgers University, Baylor University, University of Houston, Michigan State University, Stetson University, Loyola University, Faulkner University, Mississippi College, and Louisiana State University.
Political science majors receive prestigious internships at the local, state, and national levels of government. They include but are not limited to the Delta Regional Authority, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, U.S. Senator John Kennedy, U.S. Senator David Vitter, U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu, U.S. Congressman Garret Graves, U.S. Congressman Rodney Alexander, U.S. Congressman John Fleming, U.S. Congressman Ralph Abraham, U.S. Senator John Ensign, Governor John Bel Edwards, and former Governor Bobby Jindal. There have also been placements in the Louisiana State House of Representatives, Louisiana State Senate, Louisiana Attorney General’s office and other offices in the states of Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, Nevada, and Texas.
Many MPA students also participate in internships at government and nonprofit organizations throughout the region. Past internships have included opportunities with the Children’s Coalition of Northeast Louisiana, U.S. Representative Clay Higgins, Ouachita Parish District Attorney's Office, Union Parish Library, Louisiana Dept. of Health - Rapides Parish Health Unit, Ouachita Green, and New Orleans Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness.
ULM offers an online-only MPA degree program designed for graduate students anywhere in the world. MPA courses are offered in eight-week and sixteen-week formats every semester, allowing the degree to be completed in as little as 12 months. Concentrations are offered in public management, administration of health, administration of justice, administration of education, management, and public parks management.
