Health Studies Practicum: Frequently Asked Questions for Students

What is the practicum course that I register for?

HLST 4003 Health Science Practicum. This course is non-printing or not visible in banner to students. Prior to classification registration each semester, the practicum coordinator will send the course CRN to senior students approved to register for the practicum course.

Is there a fee associated with the practicum?

Yes. A $250 fee is applied for each student who registers for HLST 4003. These fees help the department with essential coordination of the practicum experiences and educational materials for our students.

How can a student find a practicum?

Practicum opportunities are posted on the Program’s website here.  Students can also identify their own practicum experience through their own connections, networks, prior work experience, etc. For more information direct questions to the practicum coordinator: Dr. Bower at jbower@ulm.edu.

Can a student develop their own customized practicum?

Yes. As long as the student submits and receives approval by the department and practicum coordinator.  It can take several months for a new practicum to be approved through ULM and the site organization.

Can Health Studies Pre-Professional majors take the practicum course?

Yes. Students in the HSPP degree track have the option to enroll in practicum to obtain observation and volunteer hours needed for application to their health professional programs.

Do students in the Accelerated Online Healthcare Management/Marketing degree plan complete a practicum?

Yes. Our online distant students complete a practicum based on their location. Our online students work closely with the Practicum Coordinator early on to identify an appropriate practicum site in their location that meets the course objectives.

Can a practicum be done at a student’s former or current place of employment?

Yes. A practicum can be completed at a current or former place of employment as long as the practicum is distinct from any on-going work the student is being paid for and is determined to meet the criteria.

Does the preceptor-student relationship need to be one-on-one?

In many cases the preceptor-student relationship will be one-one-one. However, the practicum can be team-based if the project meets required practicum criteria for each student.

Are deliverables required for the practicum?

Yes. Students are required to provide final deliverables that are mutually agreed upon by the student and the preceptor in the practicum learning plan. The formant and content of the final deliverables need to be in line with the defined learning objectives and contribute to the student’s career growth and development.

Can I take practicum over the summer or winter sessions?
