LDCC and ULM collaborate to deliver medical science lab career pathways

In a continued effort to bridge the bayou, Louisiana Delta Community College and the University of Louisiana Monroe will share resources to jointly deliver instruction for medical lab science career pathways. At LDCC, the 65-credit-hour Medical Laboratory Technicians Program includes certifications or exit points as a phlebotomist, a medical lab assistant, and terminating as a medical lab technician. Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn an associate of applied science degree. Students will then be eligible to seamlessly enter ULM's medical lab science bachelor's degree program. After successfully completing thirty hours online at ULM, students will graduate with their bachelor's degree in medical lab sciences.

Dr. Wendy Bailes named Dean of ULM College of Health Sciences

The University of Louisiana has named Wendy Bailes, Ph.D., RN, the new Dean of the College of Health Sciences, pending University of Louisiana System board approval. Bailes served as Interim Dean since May 2023. She was previously the Director of the Kitty DeGree School of Nursing at ULM.

ULM Kinesiology faculty members publish co-written article in international journal

ULM kinesiology professor Dr. William Hey recently co-authored an international article in the Journal of Pedagogical Research along with instructor Jessica Reynolds. The research title is "Studying U.S. college faculty during the COVID-19 pandemic: Perceptions of severity, concerns, sources of information, preventive behaviors, barriers to work performance, and impact on work productivity." The study examines U.S. college faculty perceptions of and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summer research empowers career development for Health Studies students

In the summer of 2023, two ULM Health Studies students, Sohalia Schoen and Mikala Weems, attended two summer research programs offered through the Louisiana State University Health campus in Shreveport and New Orleans. Schoen secured a spot in the immersive eight-week summer research program in cardiovascular disease known as the CURIOUS program. Weems participated in the Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) summer program-- Building Health Teams.

ULM MLS program partners with LifeShare for blood drive, Sep. 18-19

The University of Louisiana Monroe Medical Laboratory Science Society and LifeShare Blood Center join together for a two-day blood drive on Monday, September 18 and Tuesday, September 19 to help save lives. The blood drive will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days in the Hangar Ballroom A on the second floor of the ULM SUB.

Radiologic Technology students and faculty represent ULM at annual meeting

The University of Louisiana Monroe Radiologic Technology students attended and competed in state competitions with several other schools at the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists (LSRT) Annual Conference July 13-15th, 2023. "This event allows our students to network and grow as student technologists. I am so proud of our students and faculty and for the opportunity to attend this event," said ULM Radiologic Technology program director Brett Bennett.

ULM Foundation receives $50K donation to create the Amy Katherine Lewis Student Award Endowment in Medical Laboratory Science

A $50,000 donation made to the ULM Foundation has established the Amy Katherine Lewis Student Award Endowment in Medical Laboratory Science. The donation was made in memory of Amy Katherine Lewis by her parents Jay and Teri Lewis. Amy Katherine Lewis was a 2016 graduate of ULM, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science. Glenwood Regional Medical Center hired Amy upon graduation, where she worked in the laboratory until her passing in July 2020.

Kitty DeGree School of Nursing hosts second annual boot camp for high school students

The Kitty DeGree School of Nursing at the University of Louisiana Monroe recently hosted its second annual nursing boot camp for high school students from June 6-9, 2023. The camp hosted 51 campers from all over the state. Throughout the four-day camp, campers were introduced to a wide range of nursing skills including taking vital signs, caring for different types of patients, starting an IV, and even a simulated surgical environment.

ULM Foundation highlights recent donations

During the inaugural Day of Giving on May 17, 2023, the ULM Foundation received over $2.3 million in donations in 24 hours. A portion of those donations came in the form of matching gifts from partner businesses. The ULM Foundation would like to recognize the generosity of these businesses.

School of Allied Health students and faculty receive awards at annual luncheon

The School of Allied Health (SOAH) under the College of Health Science (COHS) held its annual Spring 2023 Professional Business Luncheon Networking event and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 4 at Bayou Pointe where a total of 300 people attended which included health science students, healthcare community leaders, and faculty.

ULM students travel to Dominican Republic for first cross-college service-learning trip

Students and faculty from the four colleges of the University of Louisiana Monroe recently traveled to the Dominican Republic for a service-learning trip from April 8 - 14, 2023. Twenty-seven students and faculty from physical therapy/kinesiology, social work, political science, education, and pharmacy traveled to the Dominican Republic to engage in service learning centered around Abba's House Children's Center, located in the barrio of Cienfuegos, a nonprofit organization that educates, feeds, and provides medical care for 125 children living in extreme poverty. Students were also engaged in various learning and practice experiences related to their specific areas of study in Santiago.
